The young Fantic riders also showed good speed at the German GP, the eighth round of the EMX125 European Championship. The final results did not fully reflect their potential, but Douwe Van Mechgelen still brought home a solid eighth place overall, despite not being 100 percent after the knee knock he suffered in France.
The weekend at the historic Teutschenthal track had started very promisingly, with Francesco Bellei setting the third fastest time in his qualifying group, followed by Douwe Van Mechgelen in seventh.
Once again, the starts proved crucial. In Race 1, the two Fantic standard bearers started just outside the top 10 but were quick to make up ground. Bellei climbed back up to fifth and then finished sixth after losing a position in the final, just ahead of his teammate. At the end of the race, however, the talented driver from Trentino suffered a penalty, dropping back to 11th. Van Mechgelen, on the other hand, moved up to sixth.
Race 2 on Sunday started uphill, with both drivers struggling at the start and finding themselves at the back of the pack. Van Mechgelen was able to react as best he could, setting very competitive lap times and climbing up to 11th place, a result that earned him eighth place overall. Bellei, on the other hand, well over 30th place on the first pass, did his best to recover but was unable to go beyond 16th place, finishing 12th overall.
Douwe Van Mechgelen:
“Considering I wasn’t even sure how the knee would respond, I have to be happy with this result. The pace for the top 5 is there, I just had some problems at the start in race 2 and found myself at the back of the pack. I was able to make a good comeback though, with very good lap times. I am satisfied with my driving and we will try to take these positive feelings to Latvia next week as well!”
Francesco Bellei:
“Obviously these are not the results we are working for. It was quite difficult to overtake on this track and unfortunately we were not able to be there in front from the start. In any case, we gained experience and we know what we need to work on for next weekend.”
Campionato Europeo in Germania
Il weekend sul tracciato storico di Teutschenthal era partito in modo molto promettente: Francesco Bellei ha fatto segnare il terzo tempo nel suo gruppo di qualifica, seguito da Douwe Van Mechgelen in settima posizione.
Ancora una volta, le partenze si sono rivelate cruciali. In gara 1, i due alfieri Fantic sono scattati appena fuori dalla top 10 ma sono stati rapidi a recuperare terreno. Bellei è risalito fino alla quinta posizione, per poi chiudere sesto dopo aver perso una posizione nel finale, appena davanti al compagno di squadra. A fine gara però, il talento trentino ha subito una penalità, retrocedendo in undicesima posizione. Van Mechgelen invece è passato in sesta piazza.
Gara 2 della domenica è iniziata in salita, con entrambi i piloti che hanno faticato al via e si sono ritrovati nelle retrovie. Van Mechgelen ha saputo reagire al meglio, facendo segnare tempi sul giro molto competitivi e risalendo fino all’undicesimo posto, risultato che gli è valso l’ottavo posto assoluto. Bellei invece, ben oltre la trentesima piazza al primo passaggio, ha fatto il possibile per recuperare ma non è riuscito ad andare oltre la sedicesima posizione, terminando dodicesimo nella classifica assoluta.
Douwe Van Mechgelen:
“Considerando che non ero nemmeno sicuro di come avrebbe risposto il ginocchio, devo essere contento di questo risultato. Il passo per la top 5 c’è, ho solo avuto qualche problema in partenza in gara 2 e mi sono ritrovato in fondo al gruppo. Però sono riuscito a rimontare bene, con ottimi tempi sul giro. Sono soddisfatto della mia guida e cercheremo di portare queste sensazioni positive anche in Lettonia la prossima settimana!”
Francesco Bellei:
“Ovviamente non sono questi i risultati per cui stiamo lavorando. Era piuttosto difficile sorpassare su questa pista e purtroppo non siamo riusciti ad essere lì davanti fin dalla partenza. In ogni caso, abbiamo acquisito esperienza e sappiamo su cosa dobbiamo lavorare in vista del prossimo weekend.”
