On the red clay of Águeda, Bertram Thorius and the Fantic Factory Racing EMX team secured their second podium finish of the season in the European 125 Championship. The 15-year-old Danish rider once again proved himself to be one of the most promising talents in the class. Leading the field in free practice and finishing fourth in qualifying, he put in a very solid performance in Race 1, crossing the line in fourth place. Race 2 went even better: lightning-fast off the mark on his Fantic XX 125 fitted with the Racing kit, he took the holeshot. Thanks to an excellent pace, he finished the race in second place, a result that saw him take the third step on the podium at the Portuguese Grand Prix.
A podium finish that would also have been within reach for Gennaro Utech, who had an excellent Saturday. Third in the timed practice sessions, he was among the frontrunners in Race 1: fast and determined right from the start, he held second place for most of the race. Due to a few too many mistakes in the closing stages, he had to concede a position with two laps to go, but still secured a superb third place.
The Italian rider therefore had every chance of challenging for a top-three finish overall, but a crash on the first lap of the second race knocked him out of the competition. Following contact with another rider, Utech was unable to do anything to avoid the crash, sustaining a severe injury to his left shoulder. A medical assessment at the track ruled out any fractures, and his condition will be reassessed in the coming days.
In the provisional championship standings, the Fantic duo occupy fourth and sixth place. Now, however, attention turns to the Junior World Championship, scheduled for 4 and 5 July in Jinin, Czech Republic.
Bertram Thorius:
“I’m really happy to be back on the podium. I rode well all weekend and it was brilliant to take the holeshot in Race 2. All in all, it was a great GP and I’d like to thank the Fantic Factory Racing EMX team, my coach Kenny and everyone who’s supporting me at the track and back home. Now I can’t wait to represent Denmark at the Junior World Championship.”
Gennaro Utech:
“I’m obviously disappointed to end the weekend like this, especially as on Saturday we’d shown we were in with a chance of a podium finish: third in qualifying, a good start and still third in Race 1 too. In Race 2, there was nothing I could do to avoid the crash. Fortunately, there’s no serious damage to my shoulder, so let’s look ahead.”
Bertram Thorius e la Fantic XX 125 sul podio in Portogallo
Sulla terra rossa di Águeda è arrivato il secondo podio stagionale per Bertram Thorius e il team Fantic Factory Racing EMX nell’Europeo 125. Il 15enne pilota danese si è confermato ancora una volta tra i talenti più promettenti della categoria. Davanti a tutti nelle prove libere e quarto nelle prove cronometrate, ha disputato una gara 1 molto solida, tagliando il traguardo in quarta posizione. Ancora meglio gara 2: velocissimo al via in sella alla Fantic XX 125 con kit Racing, ha conquistato l’holeshot. Grazie a un ottimo ritmo ha chiuso la manche al secondo posto, un risultato che gli ha permesso di salire sul terzo gradino del podio del GP del Portogallo.
Un podio che sarebbe stato alla portata anche di Gennaro Utech, autore di un ottimo sabato. Terzo nelle prove cronometrate, è stato tra i protagonisti di gara 1: veloce e determinato fin dalla partenza, ha occupato la seconda posizione per gran parte della manche. A causa di qualche errore di troppo nel finale ha dovuto cedere una posizione a due giri dalla fine, ma ha comunque conquistato un bellissimo terzo posto.
Il talento azzurro aveva quindi tutte le carte in regola per giocarsi anche la top 3 assoluta, ma una caduta al primo giro della seconda manche lo ha estromesso dalla gara. Dopo un contatto con un altro pilota, Utech non ha potuto fare nulla per evitare l’incidente, riportando un forte trauma alla spalla sinistra. Un controllo medico in pista ha escluso fratture e le sue condizioni saranno rivalutate nei prossimi giorni.
Nella classifica provvisoria di campionato, il duo Fantic occupa la quarta e la sesta posizione. Ora però l’attenzione si sposta sul Mondiale Junior, in programma il 4 e 5 luglio a Jinin in Repubblica Ceca.
Bertram Thorius:
“Sono molto felice di essere tornato sul podio. Ho guidato bene per tutto il weekend ed è stato bellissimo conquistare l’holeshot in gara 2. Tutto sommato, è stato un ottimo GP e ci tengo a ringraziare il team Fantic Factory Racing EMX, il mio coach Kenny e tutti quelli che mi stanno supportando a bordo pista e da casa. Adesso non vedo l’ora di rappresentare la Danimarca al Mondiale Junior.”
Gennaro Utech:
“Sono ovviamente deluso di chiudere il weekend in questo modo, soprattutto perché sabato avevamo dimostrato di poterci giocare il podio: terzo in qualifica, una buona partenza e sempre terzo anche in gara 1. In gara 2 non ho potuto fare nulla per evitare la caduta. Per fortuna non ci sono danni gravi alla spalla, quindi guardiamo avanti.”
