Third podium of the season for Francesco Bellei and first top-three finish in a moto for Douwe Van Mechgelen: the weekend on the brand-new KymiRing track in Finland proved positive for the Fantic Factory Racing EMX team.
Already his sixth-fastest time in timed practice showed that Van Mechgelen was among the leading pack. Starting around tenth place, the 16-year-old Belgian recovered lap after lap, pushing until the end and crossing the finish line with an extraordinary third place, the best career result for the reigning Dutch Masters Champion.
His teammate Francesco Bellei had a more complicated start to the weekend, with an unlucky timed practice session that saw him line up in 18th place. Despite this, he found himself just outside the top-10 on the first lap of race one. With grit and determination, he recovered several positions to finish fourth, just behind the other factory Fantic XX 125.
Sunday’s Race 2 followed a similar pattern, but this time it was Van Mechgelen who found himself a bit further back at the start. Bellei battled in the top 10 throughout the heat, managing to secure fourth place with two laps to go—a result that allowed him to return to the podium in third overall, a great achievement for the talented rider from Trentino, who thrived on hardpack.
His Belgian teammate, Douwe Van Mechgelen, continued his strong form, crossing the finish line in sixth place, missing his first career podium by just one point. He still finished an excellent fifth overall.
Francesco Bellei:
“In the end, it was a good weekend, even if it started a bit uphill, with an 18th place in qualifying. That’s why I never expected to finish on the podium. Instead, I rode well in both heats, finished fourth twice, and finished third overall—on the sand. I’m very happy to be back on the podium and also very satisfied with my riding. Now, full focus on the next race: let’s keep going!”
Douwe Van Mechgelen:
“It was a positive weekend. I showed good speed in the timed sessions – it was my best qualifying ever in the European Championship. I still need to improve my starts a bit; I had to come back in both heats. In Race 1, I managed to climb to third place, with excellent lap times, and I’m very happy about that. It was probably the best day of my life so far. Race 2 was more difficult; my start wasn’t perfect, and recovering was complicated. I only missed one overtake to get on the podium, but that’s part of the game. I’ll try again in Lommel in front of my home crowd.”

Già il sesto tempo nelle prove cronometrate aveva mostrato che Van Mechgelen era nel gruppo dei protagonisti. Partito intorno alla decima posizione, il 16enne belga che ha recuperato giro dopo giro, spingendo fino alla fine e tagliando il traguardo con uno straordinario terzo posto, il miglior risultato in carriera per il Campione in carica dei Dutch Masters.
Il suo compagno di squadra Francesco Bellei ha avuto un inizio di weekend più complicato, con una sessione di prove cronometrate sfortunata che lo ha visto allinearsi al cancelletto di partenza 18esimo. Nonostante ciò, si è ritrovato appena fuori dalla top 10 nel primo giro di gara 1. Con grinta e determinazione, ha recuperato diverse posizioni chiudendo quarto, appena dietro all’altra Fantic XX 125 ufficiale.
Gara 2 della domenica ha seguito un andamento simile, questa volta però è stato Van Mechgelen a ritrovarsi un po’ più indietro al via. Bellei ha lottato per tutta la manche nella top 10, riuscendo a conquistare il quarto posto a due giri dalla fine – un risultato che gli ha permesso di tornare sul podio in terza posizione assoluta, un grande traguardo per il talento trentino che è cresciuto sui terreni duri.
Il suo compagno di squadra belga, Douwe Van Mechgelen, ha confermato il suo momento positivo, tagliando il traguardo in sesta posizione e mancando per un solo punto il primo podio in carriera. Ha comunque chiuso con un ottimo quinto posto assoluto.
Francesco Bellei:
“Alla fine è stato un buon weekend, anche se era iniziato un po’ in salita, con il 18esimo posto in qualifica. Per questo non mi sarei mai aspettato di salire sul podio. Invece ho guidato bene in entrambe le manche, ho chiuso due volte quarto e sono arrivato terzo assoluto – sulla sabbia. Sono molto felice di essere tornato sul podio e anche molto soddisfatto della mia guida. Ora massima concentrazione sulla prossima gara: continuiamo così!”
Douwe Van Mechgelen:
“È stato un weekend positivo. Ho dimostrato di avere una buona velocità nelle cronometrate – è stata la mia miglior qualifica di sempre nell’Europeo. Devo ancora migliorare un po’ le partenze, ho dovuto rimontare in entrambe le manche. In gara 1 sono riuscito a risalire fino al terzo posto, con ottimi tempi sul giro, e ne sono molto felice. È stato probabilmente il giorno più bello della mia vita finora. Gara 2 è stata più difficile, la mia partenza non era perfetta e recuperare era complicato. Mi è mancato solo un sorpasso per salire sul podio, ma fa parte del gioco. Ci riproverò a Lommel davanti al pubblico di casa.”
