Over the weekend at Matterley Basin, Francesco Bellei and his Fantic XX 125 returned to the top of the rankings, battling at the top of the highly competitive EMX125 class. After finishing sixth in timed practice and a good start in race 1, the Trentino talent needed just one lap to move into the top 3. From there, he continued to push without making any mistakes, taking a well-deserved second place thanks to a great finish.
In the second and decisive heat, Bellei immediately moved into the top 5. He fought until the checkered flag, finishing in fifth position – a result that saw him just miss the podium with fourth place overall, tied on points with the third-placed rider. A positive performance that marks a convincing return after some unlucky races.
His teammate Douwe Van Mechgelen also showed good pace aboard the Fantic XX 125, but had a crash in the early stages of timed practice, hitting his shoulder. The young Belgian gritted his teeth but was unable to find the right momentum at the start to join the leading group. He nevertheless brought home a ninth and eleventh place in a comeback, finishing ninth overall.
The final result doesn’t always reflect the full potential, and the same goes for Simone Mancini, competing in the European EMX250. The 17-year-old Italian was very fast from the start, setting excellent times and taking fourth place in timed practice. Race 1 started even better, with Mancini taking the lead during the first lap and holding it for a good part of the heat. A complicated finale saw him lose a few positions, but he still finished fifth. Sunday’s Race 2 proved more difficult: the rider from Marche finished 14th, but still managed to get back into the top 10 of the day.
Francesco Bellei:
“I’m very happy with the first heat, the pace was there and we came close to winning. Race 2 was more difficult, I tried but unfortunately we just missed the podium. It’s clear that there’s a bit of disappointment, but the fact remains that we’re back in the positions that matter. Now we need to continue like this to finish the season in the best possible way.”
Douwe Van Mechgelen:
“I hurt my shoulder on the first lap of timed practice, so I wasn’t at my best physically. Despite everything, I managed to bring home a ninth place overall, thanks to physiotherapy and some painkillers. I’m not satisfied with how I rode, but given the conditions, I did what I could. It’s a shame, because in free practice I had shown a good pace and I know I can do much more. But I’m certainly not giving up.”
Campionato Europeo in Gran Bretagna
Anche nella seconda e decisiva manche, Bellei si è subito inserito nella top 5. Ha lottato fino alla bandiera a scacchi, chiudendo in quinta posizione – un risultato che lo ha visto sfiorare il podiocon il quarto posto assoluto, a pari punti con il terzo classificato. Una prestazione positiva che segna un ritorno convincente dopo alcune gare sfortunate.
Anche il suo compagno di squadra Douwe Van Mechgelen ha mostrato un buon passo in sella alla Fantic XX 125, ma è incappato in una caduta nelle prime fasi delle prove cronometrate, battendo la spalla. Il giovane belga ha stretto i denti ma non è riuscito a trovare lo spunto giusto al via per inserirsi nel gruppo di testa. Ha comunque portato a casa un nono e un undicesimo posto in rimonta, chiudendo nono assoluto.
Il risultato finale non sempre rispecchia tutto il potenziale, e lo stesso vale per Simone Mancini, impegnato nell’Europeo EMX250. Il 17enne pilota Fantic è stato velocissimo sin dalle prime battute, segnando ottimi tempi e conquistando la quarta posizione nelle prove cronometrate. Gara 1 è iniziata ancora meglio, con Mancini che ha preso il comando nel corso del primo giro e lo ha mantenuto per buona parte della manche. Un finale complicato lo ha visto perdere qualche posizione, ma ha comunque portato a casa un buon quinto posto. Gara 2 della domenica si è rivelata più difficile: il marchigiano ha concluso 14esimo, ma è riuscito comunque a rientrare nella top 10 overall.
Francesco Bellei:
“Sono molto contento della prima manche, il ritmo c’era e abbiamo sfiorato la vittoria. Gara 2 è stata più difficile, ci ho provato ma purtroppo abbiamo mancato il podio per un soffio. È chiaro che un po’ di delusione c’è, ma resta il fatto che siamo tornati nelle posizioni che contano. Ora bisogna continuare così per finire al meglio la stagione.”
Douwe Van Mechgelen:
“Mi sono fatto male alla spalla al primo giro delle prove cronometrate, per cui non stavo benissimo fisicamente. Nonostante ciò, sono riuscito a portare a casa un nono posto assoluto, grazie anche a qualche antidolorifico. Non sono soddisfatto di come ho guidato, ma ho fatto quello che potevo. È un peccato, perché nelle libere avevo mostrato un buon passo e so di poter fare molto di più. Ma non mollo di certo.”
