In the practice sessions on Saturday, when the Agueda track was still dry, the gaps were minimal and the very young Fantic riders immediately demonstrated their competitiveness. Simone Mancini, rookie of the EMX250 class, finished third in free practice and sixth in timed practice. In the 125, Francesco Bellei lined up fourth at the gate – just 0.508 seconds from the pole.
Sixth after the first lap in race 1 thanks to a decent start and some decisive overtaking, Bellei continued to push even when the rain turned into a real deluge. He was good at avoiding mistakes in difficult conditions and his determination was rewarded with an excellent third place. His teammate Douwe Van Mechgelen – fresh from his victory at the Dutch Masters – also immediately entered the top 10. In the mud of Agueda, the young Belgian rider tenaciously resisted until the finish line, finishing in a good ninth place, thus placing a second official Fantic XX 125 in the top 9.
Race 2 was another battle in the mud, but Bellei kept his cool on a tricky track, crossing the finish line in fourth place and taking third overall. A great result and important championship points for the Trentino talent, who remains second in the overall standings and closes the gap to the leader. Van Mechgelen was on course to give the Fantic Factory Racing EMX team a double top 5, but a crash while he was in fourth dropped him to eighth. He still took home an encouraging seventh overall.
In the EMX250 European Championship, Simone Mancini made a dream start in race 1, taking his first holeshot aboard the Fantic XXF 250 and immediately taking the lead. The 17-year-old from the Marche impressed with his technique and speed despite the extreme conditions, and even if he had to give up the lead with four laps to go, he took a beautiful second place in the heat – with a wide margin over the chasing group.
Race 2 on Sunday, held in the pouring rain, proved to be an even tougher challenge. Mancini got off to a good start again and moved into second place early in the race. Even giving up two places he was virtually on the second step of the podium – until three laps from the end, when he crashed and was forced to stop to change his goggles. He crossed the line in eighth place and narrowly missed out on the podium. A fifth overall finish, just three points off third, is still a very positive sign, especially ahead of the next round in just a week’s time in Lugo, Spain.
Francesco Bellei:
“Another mud bath, but we take home third overall thanks to two solid heats. The track conditions were really on the limit, but we scored important championship points. I’m happy with the result, now a short break for the European 125, but we’re excited for the next round in France.”
Simone Mancini:
“Saturday went really well, I got the holeshot and a great second place in the heat. Sunday wasn’t bad either, although I have to say that, in my opinion, the conditions were even worse than those experienced in Cozar at the beginning of the season. I tried, I wanted the podium, but in the end I just tried to save what I could, and a fifth place overall is definitely a solid result.”
Douwe Van Mechgelen:
“Overall it was a consistent weekend, and that’s what I was looking for. In race 2, third place was within reach, I tried but I made a mistake and crashed. It’s a shame, but we still take home a lot of positives: a good time in practice, two good starts and, overall, a good result.”
Campionato Europeo in PORTOGALLO
Sesto dopo il primo giro in gara 1 grazie a una partenza discreta e qualche sorpasso deciso, Bellei ha continuato a spingere anche quando la pioggia si è trasformata in un vero e proprio diluvio. È stato bravo ad evitare errori in condizioni difficili e la sua determinazione è stata premiata con un ottimo terzo posto. Anche il suo compagno di squadra Douwe Van Mechgelen – reduce dalla vittoria ai Dutch Masters – si è inserito fin da subito nella top 10. Nel fango di Agueda, il giovane pilota belga ha resistito con tenacia fino al traguardo, chiudendo con un buon nono posto, piazzando così una seconda Fantic XX 125 ufficiale in top 9.
Gara 2 è stata un’altra battaglia nel fango, ma Bellei ha mantenuto la calma su un tracciato insidioso, tagliando il traguardo in quarta posizione e conquistando il terzo posto assoluto. Un ottimo risultato e punti importanti per il campionato per il talento trentino, che resta secondo in classifica generale e accorcia le distanze dal leader. Van Mechgelen era in corsa per regalare una doppia top 5 al team Fantic Factory Racing EMX, ma una caduta mentre si trovava quarto lo ha fatto scivolare in ottava posizione. Ha comunque portato a casa un incoraggiante settimo posto assoluto.
Nell’Europeo EMX250, Simone Mancini ha messo a segno una partenza da sogno in gara 1, conquistando il suo primo holeshot in sella alla Fantic XXF 250 e scappando subito in testa alla corsa. Il diciasettenne marchigiano ha impressionato per tecnica e velocità nonostante le condizioni al limite, e anche se ha dovuto cedere la leadership a quattro giri dalla fine, ha conquistato un bellissimo secondo posto di manche – con ampio margine sul gruppo degli inseguitori.
Gara 2 della domenica, disputata sotto una pioggia incessante, si è rivelata una sfida ancora più dura. Mancini è partito bene un’altra volta e si è portato in seconda posizione nelle fasi iniziali della gara. Anche cedendo due posizioni era virtualmente sul secondo gradino del podio – fino a tre giri dalla fine, quando è scivolato ed è stato costretto a fermarsi per cambiare gli occhiali. Ha tagliato il traguardo in ottava posizione e il podio gli è sfuggito di poco. Un quinto assoluto, a soli tre punti dal terzo, è comunque un segnale molto positivo anche in vista della prossima tappa tra solo una settimana a Lugo in Spagna.
Francesco Bellei:
“Un altro bagno di fango, ma portiamo a casa un terzo posto assoluto grazie a due manche solide. Le condizioni della pista erano davvero al limite, ma abbiamo conquistato punti importanti per il campionato. Sono contento del risultato, ora un breve stop per l’Europeo 125, ma siamo carichi per il prossimo appuntamento in Francia.”
Simone Mancini:
“Sabato è andata molto bene, ho conquistato l’holeshot e un ottimo secondo posto di manche. Non è andata male nemmeno domenica, anche se devo dire che, a mio avviso, le condizioni erano anche peggiori di quelle vissute a Cozar a inizio stagione. Ci ho provato, volevo il podio, ma alla fine ho cercato solo di salvare quello che potevo, e un quinto posto assoluto è sicuramente un risultato solido.”
Douwe Van Mechgelen:
“Nel complesso è stato un weekend costante, ed è quello che cercavo. In gara 2, il terzo posto era alla portata, ci ho provato ma ho sbagliato e sono caduto. Peccato, ma ci portiamo a casa comunque tanti aspetti positivi: un buon tempo nelle prove, due belle partenze e, in generale, un buon risultato.”
