Now that the 125cc European Championship has reached the halfway point, the Fantic Factory Racing EMX riders put in another strong performance at Kegums, narrowly missing the podium at the Latvian Grand Prix. In qualifying, Gennaro Utech and Bertram Thorius posted the fifth- and sixth-fastest times in their respective qualifying groups.
At the start of Race 1, Utech settled into seventh place, with Thorius right behind him in eighth. While the Sicilian rider battled for fifth place, his teammate crashed midway through the race, losing ground. Utech made no mistakes, securing a solid sixth-place finish. Thorius, on the other hand, managed to climb back up to eleventh place thanks to a strong pace, especially in the final stages of the race.
Race 2 on Sunday once again saw the Fantic factory riders among the class leaders. Both got off to a strong start on their XX 125s with Racing kits: Utech immediately moved into third place, with Thorius hot on his heels, but in an attempt to pass him, Thorius made a mistake, dropping a position but fortunately avoiding a crash. Pushing hard until the end, Utech defended third place with great determination. An excellent result that brought him very close to the overall podium as well, missing it by just two points. Thorius finished fifth in the race, placing sixth overall.
As a testament to their excellent work, Thorius and Utech now occupy fourth and fifth place in the provisional championship standings, with the next round of the EMX125 European Championship scheduled for Águeda, Portugal, at the end of the month.
Gennaro Utech:
“A good weekend and a great Race 2, after an excellent start. I managed to come out of the first corner in fourth, immediately moving up to third, and I tried to push as hard as I could and keep the pace until the end to secure a podium finish. Unfortunately, I finished fourth overall by just two points, and obviously, that stings a bit. Still, it was a good weekend, and we’ll try to keep moving in this direction.”
Bertram Thorius:
“All in all, it was a positive weekend. I struggled in the first part of Race 1, making too many mistakes, before finding my rhythm and climbing back up to eleventh place. Today I got off to a great start: I was third, then my teammate passed me, and as I tried to respond, I got stuck in a very soft spot. Fortunately, I managed to avoid a crash, but the contact damaged the front brake, which made the rest of the race a bit more complicated. I still gave it my all and finished fifth in the race, moving up to fourth place in the championship. We’ll keep working hard ahead of Portugal.”
Utech sfiora il podio in Lettonia
Arrivati al giro di boa del Campionato Europeo 125, i ragazzi del Fantic Factory Racing EMX si sono difesi bene anche a Kegums, sfiorando il podio al GP di Lettonia. Già in qualifica,Gennaro Utech e Bertram Thorius hanno fatto segnare il quinto e il sesto tempo nel loro gruppo di prove cronometrate.
Al via di gara 1, Utech si è inserito in settima posizione, con Thorius subito dietro in ottava piazza. Mentre il pilota siciliano ha lottato per la quinta posizione, il suo compagno di squadra è incappato in una caduta a metà manche, perdendo terreno. Utech non ha commesso errori, portando a casa un solido sesto posto. Thorius invece è riuscito a risalire fino all’undicesima posizione grazie a un buon ritmo, soprattutto nel finale di gara.
Gara 2 della domenica ha visto gli ufficiali Fantic ancora una volta tra i protagonisti della classe. Entrambi sono scattati forte in sella alla XX 125 con kit Racing: Utech si è subito portato in terza posizione e Thorius lo seguiva a ruota ma, nel tentativo di superarlo, ha commesso un errore, perdendo una posizione ma evitando fortunatamente la caduta. Spingendo fino alla fine, Utech ha difeso il terzo posto con grande grinta. Un ottimo risultato che lo ha portato vicinissimo anche al podio assoluto, sfiorato per soli due punti. Thorius ha chiuso quinto di manche, classificandosi sesto assoluto.
A conferma dell’ottimo lavoro svolto, Thorius e Utech occupano ora il quarto e il quinto posto nella classifica provvisoria di campionato, con il prossimo appuntamento dell’Europeo EMX125 in programma ad Águeda, in Portogallo, a fine mese.
Gennaro Utech:
“Un buon weekend e una bella gara 2, dopo un’ottima partenza. Sono riuscito a uscire quarto dalla prima curva, passando subito terzo, e ho cercato di spingere al massimo e tenere il ritmo fino alla fine per conquistare il podio. Sfortunatamente, per soli due punti ho chiuso quarto assoluto e, ovviamente, un po’ brucia. Resta comunque un bel weekend e cercheremo di continuare su questa strada.”
Bertram Thorius:
“Alla fine è stato un weekend positivo. Ho faticato nella prima parte di gara 1, commettendo troppi errori, prima di trovare il mio ritmo e risalire fino all’undicesimo posto. Oggi sono partito molto bene: ero terzo, poi il mio compagno di squadra mi ha passato e, mentre cercavo di rispondere, mi sono piantato in un punto molto morbido. Fortunatamente sono riuscito a evitare la caduta, ma nel contatto si è danneggiato il freno anteriore e questo ha reso il resto della manche un po’ più complicato. Ho comunque dato il massimo e ho chiuso quinto di manche, salendo al quarto posto in campionato. Continuiamo a lavorare in vista del Portogallo.”
