The EMX125 European Championship has also resumed at Lacapelle Marival – and the Fantic Factory Racing EMX riders were right up there. In qualifying, Gennaro Utech set the third-fastest time in his group. Just a few tenths of a second behind his team-mate, Bertram Thorius finished sixth.
Right from the start of the first race, the two factory Fantic XX 125s immediately joined the leading group. Thorius held second place for most of the race, before being overtaken but refusing to give up. In an attempt to reclaim second place, he crashed on a jump with three laps to go, fortunately without suffering any physical injuries. He managed to get back on his bike and finished ninth. Utech was in contention for fourth place for a long time. Thanks to a solid performance, he secured fifth place in the race, leaving the battle for the overall podium wide open. He finished sixth.
Race 2 was a hard-fought contest: Thorius put on a show, battling for second place lap after lap and only having to concede to his direct rival in the closing stages, crossing the line in third place. However, a ten-place grid penalty saw him relegated to 13th place for failing to slow down sufficiently under yellow flags.
Utech, who had once again finished fifth following another fine performance, was thus promoted to fourth place in the race, also securing fourth place overall – his best result of the season and a significant confidence boost ahead of the upcoming rounds. The EMX125 European Championship returns to action in two weeks’ time in Latvia, with Thorius now fifth in the provisional standings, whilst Utech has climbed to eighth place.
Gennaro Utech:
“I’m pleased with the weekend; we showed some good things. After a good qualifying session, I got off to a great start in Race 1. I started fourth and, despite a few minor mistakes and some really challenging heat, I managed to finish fifth. I also got off to a good start in Race 2 and finished fifth at the chequered flag, before being promoted to fourth, both in the race and in the day’s standings, and, above all, not too far off the podium. During the break, we worked hard on our starts together with Fantic and the team, and it was certainly worthwhile. Now we need to keep going down this path, with the aim of doing even better.”
Bertram Thorius:
“I felt good this weekend and got off to two excellent starts. In Race 1, I was pushing hard to try and reclaim second place, but with three laps to go I took a heavy fall on a jump. Luckily, I managed to carry on, even though the bike was quite badly damaged. In Race 2, the rider behind me put me under pressure throughout the race and managed to overtake me in the closing stages, but I still crossed the line in third place – a result that would have allowed me to finish fourth overall and take home some important points. I’m sorry about the penalty; unfortunately, I hadn’t seen the signal, but we learn from our mistakes and look ahead.”
Il Campionato Europeo EMX125 riparte da Lacapelle Marival
A Lacapelle Marival è ripartito anche il Campionato Europeo EMX125 – e i piloti Fantic Factory Racing EMX hanno risposto presenti. Nelle prove cronometrate, Gennaro Utech ha segnato il terzo tempo del suo gruppo. A pochi decimi di distanza dal compagno di squadra, Bertram Thorius ha chiuso sesto.
Anche al via della prima manche, le due Fantic XX 125 ufficiali si sono inserite subito nel gruppo di testa. Thorius ha occupato la seconda posizione per buona parte della gara, prima di subire un sorpasso senza però mollare. Nel tentativo di riprendersi la piazza d’onore, a tre giri dalla fine è caduto su un salto, fortunatamente senza conseguenze fisiche. È riuscito a ripartire e ha concluso nono. Utech è rimasto a lungo in lotta per la quarta piazza. Grazie a una prestazione solida ha conquistato il quinto posto di manche, lasciando aperta la lotta per il podio assoluto.
Gara 2 è stata molto combattuta: Thorius ha dato spettacolo, giocandosi la seconda piazza giro dopo giro e dovendosi arrendere al suo diretto avversario solo nelle battute finali, tagliando il traguardo in terza posizione. Una penalità di dieci posizioni lo ha però retrocesso al 13° posto, per non aver rallentato a sufficienza in regime di bandiera gialla.
Utech, che aveva chiuso ancora una volta quinto al termine di un’altra bella prestazione, è così stato promosso al quarto posto di manche, conquistando anche il quarto posto assoluto – il suo miglior risultato stagionale e un’importante iniezione di fiducia in vista dei prossimi impegni. Il Campionato Europeo EMX125 tornerà in azione tra due settimane in Lettonia, con Thorius ora quinto nella classifica provvisoria, mentre Utech è salito all’ottavo posto.
Gennaro Utech:
“Sono contento del fine settimana, abbiamo fatto vedere delle belle cose. Dopo una buona qualifica, ho fatto un’ottima partenza in gara 1. Sono partito quarto e, nonostante qualche errorino e un caldo davvero impegnativo, sono riuscito a chiudere quinto. Anche in gara 2 sono scattato bene e ho chiuso quinto al traguardo, per poi essere promosso quarto, sia di manche che nella classifica di giornata, e soprattutto non troppo lontano dal podio. Durante la pausa abbiamo lavorato tanto sulle partenze insieme a Fantic e al team ed è stato sicuramente un lavoro proficuo. Ora dobbiamo proseguire su questa strada, con l’obiettivo di fare sempre meglio.”
Bertram Thorius:
“Mi sono sentito bene questo weekend e ho fatto due ottime partenze. In gara 1 stavo spingendo forte per provare a riprendermi la seconda posizione, ma a tre giri dalla fine sono caduto pesantemente su un salto. Per fortuna sono riuscito a continuare, anche se la moto era piuttosto danneggiata. In gara 2, il pilota dietro di me mi ha messo pressione per tutta la manche ed è riuscito a superarmi nel finale, ma ho comunque tagliato il traguardo in terza posizione – un risultato che mi avrebbe permesso di chiudere quarto assoluto e di portare a casa punti importanti. Mi dispiace per la penalità, purtroppo non avevo visto la segnalazione, ma impariamo dagli errori e guardiamo avanti.
